Story

What is the 💫trash💫 edition?

A series of objects that play with different mixing techniques – nerikomi being my favorite – and mixing my pottery sink waste with other clay trimmings.

If you know about pottery, we can reclaim all the trimmings of clay that haven’t been fired at all. But what about that yucky clay particles that gets stuck in the sink?

Every pottery studio needs a special sink and can’t use a normal sink – this is because clay doesn’t dissolve in water and, with time, sets to the bottom of the sink. If you have a normal household sink, this would result in cloggings, which would happen very often. That’s why we have special sinks that separate the clay particles that get disposed of after the bucket gets full.

I don’t have a special sink but I did create a water filter system to be able to re-use water to clean my hands, tools, and sponge my pots. Once a month I cleaned that water sink, put the clay particles in a plaster mold, and disposing it safely. But one day I thought… why? What happens if I fire this dirty and yucky water?

Well ,the result is a very unworkable clay (at least in my sink!) but I did manage to be able to fire it at a high temperature. I added some minerals to make it a bit more workable and combined it with clay trimmings to get some marbled results.

And these results are part of the 💫trash💫 edition.

Hope you like it and enjoy it as much as I do!
