Story

This shape I created when in January 2023, as it was the time I started my online Glaze Chemistry class. I wanted a surface to test these glazes, as I didn’t want to make tiles that would eventually end up in the trash. This is how Tamara was born!

I have been showing this summer a lot of my wild clay adventures in my stories before taking the workshop with Anja Slapnicar

One of the things I found from the clays I collected in Austria, was that they were all low fire and I could either tweak them and use them as clay bodies, or I could tweak them and convert them into glazes.

I tried both methods. And these miniature vases out of porcelain show the glaze experiments with wild clay. They are both glazes made with a combination of a clay I collected in a Hike in Traunsee and a little bit of a red clay Anja collected in Slovenia and I was able to use a bit for my experiments.

This is already very different to the colors and textures I am used to in my practice, but I somehow welcome these and look forward what they can develop and create within my clay journey.

Buckle your seatbelts, Yvonne as you know it is evolving and I am all for it!

As you know, I sell all of my glaze test as mini vases and all the money I make out of these is what funds my continuous exploration in the world of clay. So all courses, books, online classes & new materials are all thanks to all of you who have one of my mini vase experiments at your home. I appreciate your support immensely!

For you, the user, it has two different purposes: 1. a mini vase and 2. a candle-holder.

For me, the maker, it has many properties to help me test a glaze. 1st its height is perfect for my kiln elements, that way I don’t waste much kiln space when firing these. 2nd it’s a cylinder, which on loading the kiln means i can put so many of them next to each other to save space or it is ideal to add between the spaces of other things without having to compromise much space. 3rd the small detail on the front of the mini vase helps me see how the glaze will react on edges. and 4th, the most important, is that it’s so freaking cute! This means that you can find a new place for it in your home, and it is one tile less that ends up in the landfill. :)
