Story

The Takara Treasure Box.

The name Takara means “Treasure” in Japanese. So I thought, firstly, that it was such a fitting name to it, as it is there to keep your treasures or your jewelry.

The making of Takara was long and struggling. My first prototype I did using plaster molds I had at hand, and tweaking the shapes until I got that beautiful orb shape that I seem to really like (You can see it in a lot of my vases too). After I was happy with the prototype it was time to make the plaster mold. I was working very detailed on having all the angles right so that the mold was seamless and it would be easy for me to use. But all those hours of work were made for nothing. As I forgot one key element in making the mold and it was all destroyed.

I was sad, disappointed and being a little bit too hard onmyself for my hard work and my mistake. But I decided to pull through and try again. With this third try I asked through my Instagram if you thought maybe I should take a risk and carve a piece I have never carved before. You said: yes, carving makes it more interesting.

So even though I had failed twice by now, I made my journey somehow more complicated by trying something that I was not yet used to, that I didn’t feel confident in my clay skillset yet. But I had already lost two prototypes by mistakes of mine that I thought to maybe give it my all at this one last try. If it doesn’t work out then, that’s the last try I will have this year.

The carving was no easy feast, and getting the lines to be straight with my skillset was practically impossible. It took me almost all summer making and carving the perfect positive that I could work later into the plaster mold. I am particularly happy with the bottom of this piece. The angle is a perfect 45 degrees and it just makes me really happy to see it.

After months of dedication it was time to make the mold and I prayed all night before that this time it will work. from the 3 plaster molds I had to do (one for the bottom, one for the top, and one for the cylinder) two of them survived and one did not make it. THANKFULLY, the one that didn’t make it was the carved cylinder. Which easy, I swapped it with a non carved one that I already own.

So yeah, long journey and a little bit exhausting, but with beautiful results! I couldn’t be more proud of my work and my determination to try again and let go of the results and just concentrate at the task at hand.

I hope you love it as much as I do!
