Story
The material:
This piece features wild clay I personally foraged during summer hikes through Vorarlberg in Western Austria, specifically around Dornbirn and Weiler. The moment I spotted that distinctive yellow soil, I knew I’d found clay. I collected small amounts from both locations, just enough to incorporate into my work.
What makes this clay truly special is its unexpected firing temperature. Austrian clay typically fires low (950°C-1050°C), but this wild clay surprised me by holding beautifully at high temperatures (1240°C-1260°C)!
I kept the clay as natural as possible, simply removing organic debris and mixing it with water to create a slip. I then brushed this slip onto my pieces, enriching them with its gorgeous red-brown tones and unique texture. The color reminds me of rich chocolate and adds an earthy, authentic character you won’t find anywhere else.
Each piece carries a bit of the Austrian landscape within it.
